I love this, Leah! I often think about how the world has changed in my lifetime, and how my grandchildren will experience new technology that I cannot even imagine. Sadie loves FaceTime at 12 months, a technology to connect us when Howard, Joe, and I grew up with one wired phone on a party line!
Thanks, Clare! Exactly. We really can't know what's coming. There's a whole profession around "strategic foresight," trying to predict these things, and one of the tools they actually use is employing sci-fi writers to imagine how various trends might play out to extreme ends!
I love the line about mail order DVDs outgrowing their pouches! It’s pretty amazing to think that just 10 or 15 years ago Netflix was mailing out DVDs. Things changed so quickly that we hardly realize it’s happening.
Yes! Companies are always trying to predict the future and "future-proof" their products. And parents are always trying to imagine how our kids will turn out one day and set them up to succeed. But we don't have much control over how it all unfolds.
